Gross Anatomy

Oil on cradled wood panel with lead ground. Inspired by my medical background and the 16th century vanitas paintings about the temporary nature of life. Painted over 3 days, and I literally watched my still life dessicate. The dissection of the fruit reminded me of my first year gross anatomy classes in medical school decades ago. The lighting made the fruit look bare and vulnerable on a cold slab. I painted the fruit with respect, just as I treated my cadaver with respect.
