Oil on wood. This painting was inspired by the Christina Rosetti poem, "In the Bleak Midwinter." It's a religious poem based on a metaphor which, interpreted literally, evokes a frozen and seemingly lifeless world concealing the promise of spring's rebirth. Fans of Peaky Blinders may be familiar with the opening lines.

Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak mid-winter
