A retreat in Aspen, Colorado in the mid-'90s provided a wonderful opportunity to see those beautiful majestic mountains. I was inspired by the way the ski slopes appeared as though buttermilk was gently poured down that appropriately named mountain! I hope I adequately captured that feeling for those who love to ski or take in the view of Buttermilk Mountain! A reference photo, memory and imagination were used in place of en plein air since the place no longer looks like this. A burnt sienna grisaille underpainting was used to establish the atmospheric depth. Several passes of color were then placed to create the effect of buttermilk being pour down those slopes!
